Congratulations to Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs who last night defeated FC Milton ,from the Lancashire and Cheshire League , 2 - 0 in the Lancashire Amateur Cup Final. The final ,which was delayed from last year by the Covid Pandemic , was played in front of a good crowd at the Lancashire Football Association County Ground.
Two goals from Tom Taylor Hampson , one in each half gave Southport victory. The first was a close range effort and the second a free kick from 20 yards . Credit for this second goal should also go to the Manager who gestured to the scorer to place the free kick low across the turf which he duly did into the bottom corner with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. A strong defensive display was the foundation for this victory with Milton having very few clear cut chances. Southport also had a few other chances to increase their lead.
Well done to Tony Alty and Dave Stroud who have led the club for many years , to the manager Kevin Mawdsley and his assistant Neil Alty and the captain Darren Brookfield and the team. This was Southport’s fourth appearance in the final and their first success which was thoroughly deserved.
