Colne FC Vets Secure Historic Victory in Lancashire FA Veterans Cup Final Debut

In a thrilling night at the County Ground, Leyland, history was made as the Lancashire FA Veterans Cup Final took center stage for the first time. This inaugural event, hosted by Lancashire FA, brought together two formidable teams from the Mid Lancashire Football League – Bamber Bridge Vets and Colne FC Vets – in a clash that captivated football fans across the region.

Bamber Bridge Vets, fresh off a commanding 4-0 victory over Fylde Coast Soccer in the semifinals, were determined to claim the prestigious title. Meanwhile, Colne FC Vets booked their spot in the final with an impressive 3-1 win against Euston Villa Vets, setting the stage for an enthralling encounter.

The players on show included many well known names from the world of football including a number of former professionals and semi professionals.

Both teams put on a superb exhibition of entertaining football with skills and fitness showing that many of them had not lost their touch or competitiveness. Some crunching tackles and a few yellow cards were a testament to football of years gone by.

The match began with both teams showcasing their skill and determination on the field. However, it was Colne FC Vets who made the breakthrough early on when a penalty was awarded in their favor. Mark Threlfall, affectionately known as "Bambi", stepped up to take the spot-kick, only to see his effort saved by the Bamber Bridge Vets' goalkeeper. However, fortune favored Colne as the rebound fell to Ashley Aldersen, who calmly slotted the ball into the net before the keeper could recover, giving his team the lead.

Colne FC Vets continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off once again later in the first half. A remarkable lob from goalkeeper Stuart Cross found its way to Neil Chapman, known as "Chappers", who displayed excellent control to carry the ball down the field and score, extending Colne's lead to 2-0 as the halftime whistle blew.

The second half saw Bamber Bridge Vets launch a spirited offensive, but Colne FC Vets' defense held firm, thwarting their every attempt to find the back of the net. Despite the relentless pressure, Colne's defensive line remained unyielding, frustrating their opponents at every turn.

As the game progressed, Colne FC Vets seized control once again, with Ashley Alderson finding the back of the net to make it 3-0 in their favor. Bamber Bridge Vets rallied and managed to pull one back with a goal from Lennie Reid, injecting a sense of urgency into the proceedings.

However, Colne FC Vets' lead proved insurmountable, and as the final whistle blew, they were crowned the champions of the inaugural Lancashire FA Veterans Cup Final with a convincing 3-1 victory.

The night belonged to Colne FC Vets, who showcased their skill, determination, and resilience on the grand stage. As they celebrated their historic triumph, they etched their names into the annals of Lancashire football history, leaving an indelible mark on the inaugural edition of the Veterans Cup.

For Bamber Bridge Vets, it was a valiant effort that fell just short, but their contributions to a memorable final will not be forgotten. Both teams were very well supported including the chanting support of the children in the stand.

Given the recent bad weather every credit must also go the LFA for ensuring the game went ahead on a good surface and thank you to all the stewards and catering staff for looking after everyone.
