SOUTHPORT AND WALMER BRIDGE RESERVES TRIUMPH IN CUP FINALS

Southport and Ainsdale Amateurs triumphed in the Guildhall Cup Final with a comprehensive victory by 8 – 1 over Preston Wanderers at the Lancashire Football Association County Ground. Southport quickly went into a 1-0 lead in the opening few minutes but Wanderers immediately struck back with an equaliser from Bailey Barbour. After that it was one way traffic as Southport opened up a half time lead of 6 – 1. Two further goals in the second half secured the win. The goals were spread around the team with Darren Brookfield (3), Richard Wincer (2) and 1 each for Chris Gordon, Ben Edwards and man of the match Jordon Gregg .
Southport need 2 more points from their final two League games to win the Premier Division in the Mid Lancashire Football league and secure their second successive League and Cup double .
The final of the Lancastrian Brigade Cup played at Bamber Bridge’s Sir Tom Finney Stadium was a much closer affair between local rivals Walmer Bridge Reserves and Hoole Utd Reserves. Hoole raced into an early lead and were 2-0 up just after half time thanks to a brace from Sam Bamber. Walmer Bridge came more into the game early second half with a goal from full back Paul Bell. Walmer Bridge continued to dominate possession but it wasn’t until the 90th minute that they got their equaliser following a run from Jonathan Grundy which took him past 4 defenders before slotting the ball into the corner of the net. Extra time followed with both teams pretty tired by this point, but Jack Mounsey popped up in the first period to score what turned out to be the winner for Walmer Bridge Reserves. Final Score 3-2 to Walmer Bridge Reserves with the man of the match going to Jack Mounsey of Walmer Bridge Reserves.
Both games were well controlled by the match officials. Paul Jackson, Josh Ridley, John Britton and Tony Alty for the Lancastrian Brigade Cup and Tony Hawkes, Craig Power, Alan Stuttard and Kevin Roberts for the Guildhall Cup
Many thanks to the LFA and Bamber Bridge for their continued support to the League for the use of their excellent facilities.
