Thrills, Goals, and Drama Across the Divisions

Highlight this week was the Premiership match between Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs and Bickerstaffe. Photos from the Wyre Villa v New Longton Rovers Reserves match, courtesy of Derick Thomas:

This game had it all with 8 goals, a missed penalty, end to end football from two fully committed teams. At the start of play it was 1st against 3rd in the Premier Division. The weather played its part with sunshine and rain and the pitch was in excellent condition given the recent bad weather.

Southport took the lead early in the game and then Bickerstaffe had the chance to equalise but missed a penalty opportunity. This did not put them off as they built up a 3-1 advantage scoring a couple of goals at the start of the second half. Southport came back to make it 3-2 but Bickerstaffe scored again to make it 4-2 and it seemed game over. Southport however had different ideas, an own goal following a corner was followed up by a fine finish after the goalkeeper cleared the ball with a punch which fell kindly to a Southport player who finished it with a fine strike.

Bickerstaffe goals from Danny Huyton (x2), Ryan Giller and Jacob Dever.
Southport's goals from Jake Heaton (x3) and Jake Graham.

These two teams were a credit to the League and it all bodes well for a competitive season as they are both on the heels of Standish St Wilfs with Tarleton a close 4th on goal difference.
